Trump, electronics manufacturer announce new Wisconsin plant

Steve Doyle skeptical of luring Foxconn to Wisconsin with millions in incentives

The high-profile announcement follows a pledge from Foxconn shortly after Trump was elected to invest at least $7 billion in the United States and create between 30,000 and 50,000 jobs. 'This is a great day for America.

During the White House announcement, Trump was joined by Foxconn CEO Terry Gou, Vice President Pence, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) and Sen. In a statement, the company said the project will create 3,000 jobs with the "potential" to generate up to 13,000 new jobs.

Several other US states were under consideration for the facility, including Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio and IL.

Apparently, Foxconn will receive up to $3 billion in tax incentives, as state-funded stimulus for the execution of the project.

An invitation to the announcement describes the plant as a "state-of-the-art Gen 10.5 manufacturing facility for the production of LCD panel products". The investment in the facility by Foxconn will cost $10 billion and will be constructed somewhere in Wisconsin. In fact, he has even spoken specifically about getting Apple to manufacture its products in the United States.

Wisconsin's tax incentives would be awarded over 20 years if Foxconn meets hiring targets, officials said Wednesday. That plant was never built.

However, Gou has been talking about shifting some manufacturing to the United States for several years, with little to show for it so far.

Trump told The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday that Apple CEO Tim Cook promised him that the company would create three new manufacturing plants in the US - a claim the company declined to confirm. To put that in perspective, local publication Journal Sentinel points out that the plant will about thrice the size of the Pentagon, and it'll directly bring 13,000 jobs with it. "He called me, and he said they are going forward", Trump was quoted as saying.

Apple has not commented about Trump's claim.

Foxconn has previously said it would add a manufacturing facility somewhere in the US that would employ up to 10,000 people.

There are now no major smartphone production hubs within the U.S. In 2013, Google, which owned Motorola at the time, tried its hand at manufacturing the well-received "Moto X" smartphone in Texas.
