Iran successfully tests space-launch vehicle

US says Iran rocket test breaches UN resolution

This is while the deal between Iran and a group of six world powers, including the United States, has nothing to do with Iran's space or missile programs.

The U.S. on Friday announced new sanctions on six Iranian companies it said are key to the Islamic Republic's ballistic missile program - one day after Iran successfully launched a rocket-borne satellite into space, APA reports quoting Anadolu Agency.

"Space launch vehicles use technologies that are closely related to those of an intercontinental ballistic missile and this launch represents a threatening step by Iran", the Treasury Department said in a statement Friday. The action breaches a UN Security Council resolution due to the possibility that it could be used in ballistic missile development, according to the State Department.

In another allegation against the US adversary, Mnuchin said that missile attacks on USA partner Saudi Arabia over the weekend by Houthi rebels in Yemen had likely come with the support of Iran.

The US has long accused Tehran of shipping weapons to the Houthis, a Shiite group that controls part of Yemen and is being fought by a Saudi-led coalition.

Officials have always been concerned the technology used to put a satellite into space could also be repurposed to make a long-range ballistic missile capable of one day potentially hitting the U.S. The Simorgh rocket is based on a North Korean design.

Iran inaugurated the Imam Khomeini Space Center in Semnan Province on Thursday, the first base in Southwest Asia for sending satellites into orbit, which has been described a "turning point" in the country's space activities.

Yet Iran's foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif said Friday his country is complying with the nuclear deal that Iran struck with the USA and other world powers in 2015.

The US government says space launches help a country develop technologies closely related to those of an worldwide ballistic missile. This is done despite the rocket clearly not being a nuclear missile, Iran have a nuclear deal which precludes them being able to make a missile, and despite claims the rocket doesn't even work.

Iran's foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif responded to the new sanctions by accusing the US of violating the "the letter and spirit" of the nuclear deal.

"Iran is not, and will not be, developing nuclear weapons; so by definition can not develop anything created to be capable of delivering them", Zarif said on Twitter.
