The flood situation remains particularly dire in Gujarat, prompting an aerial survey by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as rescue operations remain in full force.

A senior Gujarati government official, Pankaj Kumar, said 2655 stranded villagers had been rescued from Banaskantha district, with at least 260 airlifted to safey by India s Air Force. State government officials also said with rain-situation easing on Wednesday, sanitary teams from different municipal corporations including from Surat will be rushed to Banaskantha district to ensure cleanliness and sanitation. "NDRF rescued 450 persons on Tuesday, 56 on Wednesday; IAF 114 on Tuesday, and 40 on Wednesday, while Army rescued 580 persons on Tuesday and 214 on Wednesday, " the minister said.

The MeT Centre here predicted that heavy to very heavy rain would occur at several places in Gujarat during the next two days. The Dholidhaja, Vansal and Nimbam dams in Surendranagar; the Machchhu-1 and Ghodadharoi in Morbi; and the Kankawati dam in Jamnagar districts are at 90 percent capacity.

"The release of water from the Vasna barrage into the river has also caused inundation of low-lying areas", she said. Five National Highways, 153 State Highways and 674 Panchayat roads remained closed for vehicular traffic due to floods, hampering relief and rescue operations.
