Senate Passes Motion To Proceed On Health Care Debate

A Brief History of American Health Reform

Americans, for example, like the idea of preventing insurance carriers from denying coverage to people who have pre-existing conditions. The Association has maintained that Senate efforts must not increase the number of Americans without health insurance, further weaken the individual insurance market, undermine critical safety net programs, or make it harder for low- and moderate-income Americans to obtain quality, affordable health insurance.

The bishop echoed earlier statements, saying, "The current proposals are simply unacceptable as written, and any attempts to repeal the A.C.A. without a concurrent replacement is also unacceptable". This was a procedural vote, not one on any particular piece of legislation.

Ahead of Tuesday afternoon's Senate vote, Pennsylvania's top Democratic officials - U.S. Sen.

It's inconceivable that any of our nation's leaders think our health care system will be improved by ripping away health care from 22 million Americans and vastly increasing the costs for millions more.

The Senate may advance a narrow bill that would repeal Obamacare's insurance mandates and its tax on medical devices, with the aim of then working with House Republicans to flesh out a broader, final bill. All 48 Democrats voted against it, as did two Republicans-Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska-creating a 50-50 deadlock which was broken by Pence's vote. The amendment was defeated 45-55 with seven Republicans joining all Democrats in opposition.

For now, it's still unclear what kind of health care legislation the Senate will vote on, what may ultimately pass, and what the future holds for negotiations with the House if something does pass.

Called "Health Care Voter", the campaign will kick off Saturday, where attendees at more than 125 protests will be asked to fill out cards pledging to cast their ballots based on how their lawmakers vote on rolling back Obamacare. The site explores the AMA's health reform objectives in depth and provides resource documents, patient profiles and grassroots action links to facilitate communications with their Senators.
