Utah parents give newborn drugs hours after birth

Wilde is the father of Christenson's three younger children officials said

The drug scourge is also pushing a record number of children into foster care.

Authorities said their first encounter with Wilde happened on June 26 when they responded to reports of a theft at a Walmart in Spanish Fork. He then slammed into the exit doors as they closed, dropping his daughter, who was in a auto seat at the time, police said. Wilde allegedly put items in a shopping cart and took the items to the customer service desk to attempt to get a refund.

As Wilde attempted to leave the store, he was approached by security.

Wilde eventually handed the auto seat to a stranger before getting in his vehicle and driving away.

However, in his haste, Wilde failed to navigate the automatic sliding doors and ran straight into them, dropping the auto seat and his daughter in the process. He ran into the store's doors, which cause the vehicle seat to drop to the ground and roll over. As he did this Wilde ran past a pillar.

Witnesses did try to stop Wilde.

Wilde made a run for it, dangling his two-month old daughter in a auto seat.

According to the Utah County Sheriff's Office, on June 26, Wilde was allegedly involved in a shoplifting at a Utah Walmart.

A deputy caught up to Wilde in a nearby parking lot and took him into custody for DUI, heroin, meth, drug paraphernalia and driving without insurance. Spanish Fork Police later added charges of 3rd degree felony child abuse and theft.

Christenson is seen pregnant with one of her older children in 2012. Christenson had her other three children, boys ages 8, 4, and 2, with her in the store. His live-in lover was also arrested on an outstanding warrant for a traffic violation. It was there police learnt the shocking story of the infant girl.

The father did not want to separate the children from each other and DCFS approved him to take the other three children as well. Another man fathered the oldest boy while the younger three were born to Christenson and Wilde.

When police searched the house where the couple lived with the four children, they found drug paraphernalia scattered everywhere. When she arrived, she discovered numerous items of drug paraphernalia and called the Sheriffs Office. Suboxone was also found. "They took this medication crushed it up".

Because the four children lived in the home and could have been in unsafe proximity to the paraphernalia and prescription pills, the police added four counts each for Wilde and Christenson for child endangerment, which is a third-degree offence. Both tested positive for methamphetamine and opiates. He learned from DCFS that the two younger boys and the infant girl all tested positive for methamphetamine.

However, case investigators received information that Wilde and Christenson were using drugs again after their release. Acting on a tip, police visited their house on July 18 with a search warrant, only to find Wilde smoking heroin.

Christenson herself had been heavily using heroin and prescription pain medication during her pregnancy, leading to the baby's dependence on the substances.

Infants born to opioid addicts are usually afflicted by neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), which comes with withdrawal symptoms such as tremors, dehydration, hyperactive reflexes, and inability to gain weight.

The couple told the police they learned a method from other friends to avoid hospital staff from learning their baby's addiction.

Christenson and her boyfriend, Colby Wilde, 29, admitted that Wilde crushed up Suboxone pills and then applied some of it to the infant's gums. Investigators obtained warrants to collect blood and urine samples from them at the jail.
