Israeli Embassy guard can't leave Jordan

Jordanian street voices anger over Al Aqsa restrictions

This is because these were run by the Israeli Border Police, rather than the the Islamic Waqf, the body that controls the compound according to an agreement between Israel and Jordan, thus threatening the status quo since 1967.

Israel's foreign ministry said one of the Jordanians stabbed the security officer from behind inside a residential building adjacent to the embassy where he had gone to install some furniture.

According to reports, a second Jordanian was also killed.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with Eynat Schlein, Israel's ambassador to Jordan, and with the security official over the incident.

Danny Yatom, a former head of Mossad, Israel's intelligence agency, told NBC News that one solution to the crisis would be for Jordan to hand over the Israeli security guard in return for Israel's removal of the metal detectors from the gates of Al Asqa.

Jordan is demanding to question the guard, but Israel has refused, citing the Vienna Convention, which gives the security officer immunity from investigation and imprisonment.

But tensions have been high in recent days after Israel put in place security measures at the highly sensitive Al-Haram Al-Sharif mosque compound in east Jerusalem, known to Jews as Temple Mount.

Jordan is the Muslim custodian of the site.

Israeli authorities evacuated staff at the embassy, which is located in the Rabiyeh neighborhood, an affluent part of Amman, Jordan's capital.

The following year clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces around the site quickly led to unrest elsewhere in Jerusalem, across Israel and in the West Bank that have continued intermittently till now.

"We have started a large-scale investigation into the incident and ordered the prosecutor general to look at all the details", Jordanian police said in a statement.

He said the Israeli is the deputy director of security at the embassy.

They were shot dead by Israeli-Arab gunmen in the surrounding area on 14 July. Discussions are also under way between Israeli and Jordanian authorities to try to resolve the matter.

Meanwhile, the security Cabinet reached no decision after a six-hour meeting on how to defuse the crisis over the Jerusalem shrine, Israeli media said.

Sabri said newly installed security cameras, described in media reports as a possible alternative to the metal detectors, were discussed. Israeli guards opened fire killing 3 intruders and wounding 16 in the worst violence since Europe-wide protests erupted over the capture of Abdullah Ocalan, the leader of the Kurdish Workers Party.
