Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas freezes Israel contact over holy site dispute

Palestinian Authority freezing contacts with Israel over Jerusalem holy site dispute, says Abbas

Israel refused to remove the detectors, claiming the security measures were similar to procedures taken at other holy sites around the world.

But public security minister Gilad Erdan has said that the metal detector checks for all Muslims could eventually be replaced with different measures, including more police officers and security cameras with facial recognition technology.

On Saturday, two Palestinians were killed as the Israeli forces moved to demolish the home of a Palestinian who allegedly stabbed the three killed Israelis.

Also, three Palestinians have been killed in street clashes with Israeli forces in Jerusalem al-Quds and three Israelis in an alleged stabbing attack at a West Bank settlement.

Security forces prohibited Palestinian men under the age of 50 from entering Jerusalem's Old City for Friday Muslim prayers this week, .

Amid violent clashes over access to the Temple Mount's Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, the League of Arab States plans to hold urgent meeting on the situation in the ancient city.

Netanyahu on Saturday denounced the assault as an "act of terrorism committed by a reprehensible person incited by wild hatred", and urged Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to condemn the attack, Xinhua news agency reported.

Al Aqsa Mosque is believed to be the third-holiest site for Sunni Muslims, after the cities of Mecca and Medina.

The UN Security Council will hold talks Monday about a new wave of deadly Israeli-Palestinian unrest.

A small pro-Israeli group also gathered in front of the embassy, however, British police directed them to the back of the building when tensions between the groups raised.

It began when Israel placed metal detectors at Jerusalem's Al Aqsa mosque compound. Local reports say it's not certain whether this was coordinated with Palestinian authorities.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said it was treating three Palestinians who were shot with rubber bullets, six who suffered tear gas inhalation, and one who fell during the Qalandia clashes.
