Millions of Verizon Customer Records Were Exposed Online

Verizon data breach sees details of 14 million customers exposed

Verizon claims that no external parties accessed the data and that no loss or theft of the customer information occurred.

"NICE Systems is a trusted Verizon partner, but one that few Americans may realize has any access to their data". The data was downloadable by anyone with the easy-to-guess web address, according to the report. The cloud server was owned and operated by telephonic software and data firm NICE Systems, a third-party vendor for Verizon. Prior to then, however, UpGuard said the information could have easily been discovered by anyone knowing where to look. It's unclear if the data is limited to Verizon Wireless customers or if residential and business services (such as FiOS) had exposed customer data, too. In particular, there were no Social Security numbers or Verizon voice recordings in the cloud storage area. Finally, the number of subscriber accounts included in the media report is overstated.

What you may not know is that you are not actually speaking to Verizon directly.

The unprotected cloud server was operated by NICE, an Israeli firm that handles customer-service operations for many large American companies.

It is estimated that the actual number of affected user accounts could go up to 14 million due to the misconfigured security setting by NICE systems (Israel-based company) who is working with Verizon to provide customer service call facility.

UpGuard notified Verizon about the breach on June 13 and the data was no longer publicly available as of June 22, according to the blog post. Last month, UpGuard discovered exposed personal information belonging to more than 198 million registered USA voters stored in an Amazon S3 bucket belonging to data firm Deep Root Analytics. These details could allow malicious individuals to not only hijack smartphones, they could even be used to steal identities and drain bank accounts.

"Unfortunately, the vendor's employee incorrectly set their AWS storage to allow external access.".The phone giant said that the "overwhelming majority of information in the data set has no external value". He called it "the latest in a series of disturbing data breaches". "The worst case is that you lose access to all the services that use SMS for two-factor authentication, and countless services use and rely on SMS on being what is assumed to be a secure channel".
