What Rajon Rondo, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope Would Bring to Lakers

Detroit Pistons Kentavious Caldwell Pope takes a shot against the Orlando Magic during the first half of an NBA basketball game in Orlando Fla. A person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associ

Pistons owner Tom Gores had indicated during the season that the Pistons would have been willing to go into the luxury tax to re-sign Caldwell-Pope, which would have been the case if he had gotten a max offer sheet from another team.

The Detroit Pistons renounced their rights to the 24-year-old shooting guard on Friday, after acquiring Avery Bradley from the Boston Celtics for Marcus Morris.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is the best free agent left on the market. The Lakers had committed themselves to offering only one-year deals this year, but to compensate they were offering the remainder or most of their salary-cap space for those deals.

Their patience paid off. Caldwell-Pope is an instant upgrade, and makes this team more appealing for 2018 free agents.

Caldwell-Pope is suspended for the first two games of next season.

The Los Angeles Lakers were quite at the beginning of free agency, but Lakers rumors have picked up in recent days.

With the Bradley acquisition, things didn't come down to that and the Pistons gained financial flexibility as well as roster flexibility to play some of their younger players. Offensively, he improved as a shooter last season, hitting career highs in 3-point percentage (35) and 3s per game (two), while making 37.4 percent of his catch-and-shoot 3s, which is impressive by his previous standards. A team of Ball, Caldwell-Pope, LeBron/George, Randle and Lopez. He's younger than Rondo, but doesn't bring the veteran presence the Lakers are searching for. It's a risk, as with any gamble, because next year's market looks to be even tighter than this market was, which was already significantly less player-friendly than last year's.

One player to keep an eye on for the exception is point guard Rajon Rondo.

Nwaba had been playing in Summer League with the Lakers, showing fortitude as one of the team's strongest players.

ESPN.com's Brian Windhorst was first to report the one-year, $18 million agreement late Tuesday night.

National Basketball Association players will nearly always gamble on themselves given the opportunity, and given KCP's youth (just 24), the role he so ably fills as a 3-and-D player and the potential he has to take another big leap forward, it's hard to fault his reasoning.
