United Kingdom hospital says to re-examine case of terminally ill baby

Case of critically-ill baby back in court

So the bad case of Charlie Gard serves both to raise hard and important questions about the proper contours of parental rights - and to sound unwarranted alarms about the horrors of socialized medicine and the insidious arrival of death panels.

President Donald Trump also tweeted his desire to help the child July 3. Charlie's parents are now appealing the decision in the the U.K.'s High Court of Justice. "He literally has nothing to lose but potentially a healthier, happier life to gain", Charlie's mother, Connie Yates, wrote on a GoFundMe page that has raised more than $1.7 million.

The case gained additional worldwide attention after both Pope Francis and President Donald Trump weighed in on the case, offering their support to Charlie. They say Charlie shouldn't be the subject of a "medical experiment", but rather his right to die with dignity comes first.

Doctors at Great Ormond Street - who believe the 11 month-old's life support machines should be turned off - said the data isn't new.

"The moment a human life can begin to be measured on a sliding scale - when lawmakers and doctors decide what "life is unworthy of life" - this is the moment our humanity itself begins to unravel", he added.

Charlie's parents, Connie Yates and Chris Gard, were not only not permitted to take their son elsewhere for potential life-extending treatment, but the courts also rejected their request to have their son brought home, to spend his final hours with them there.

Peter and Emma Smith understand the hardships that infant Charlie Gard and his parents are facing. Arturo EstopiƱan, who lives with his parents in Baltimore, Md., was diagnosed at just over a year old and has lived to the age of six, also thanks to the treatment now denied to Gard.

But in that week, hospitals in Italy and the U.S. contacted the London hospital requesting to treat the tot - and claiming they have new evidence about how it will help him.

Experts said Charlie's condition was irreversible and further treatment could cause him to suffer, enabling the Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) to win permission from the courts to turn off his life support. "They have kept fighting for his life".

The tragic case has left thousands of well-wishers world wide debating what should be done for Charlie.

They have just handed in a 350,000-signature petition calling for him to be allowed to travel to the USA for treatment.

Who will care for Charlie if he does have treatment?

That is all that Charlie Gard's parents want - to give their son a chance to live.
