US Military Plane Crashes in State of Mississippi, Kills Five

Second Lt. Stephanie L. Leguizamon, of the Marine Forces Reserve in New Orleans, said Tuesday afternoon that seven of the people killed in the crash were with the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion based at based at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

The Marine Corps said it operated the plane but has provided no information on where the flight originated, or where it was going.

A Marine spokesman says a Navy corpsman and 15 Marines were killed in when a military plane crashed in rural MS as it was headed from North Carolina to California.

Tuesday morning, the Marines Forces Reserve confirmed that the crew and passengers consisted of 15 Marines and one Navy Corpsman.

This military transport plane crashed today at around 4 pm in the Mississippi Delta region, around 85 miles north of Jackson.

"Beans are about waist-high, and there wasn't much sticking out above the beans", he said.

It was the deadliest Marine crash - in the US or overseas - since 2005.

Air traffic control lost contact with the KC-130 refueling tanker that left from SC around 4 p.m. local time.

"Every resource we can pull from will be used to determine what happened", Aranda told reporters a couple miles from the crash site.

"Susan and I send our deepest condolences to the families of the Marines who lost their lives in service to our nation", Tillis wrote, referring to his wife.

According to a report from local news station WNBD, a MS airport official was quoted as saying, "The plane was being tracked by air traffic controllers in Memphis [Tennessee] and suffered structural failure at 20,000 feet that caused it to plunge into the field".

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Peter Knudson said the NTSB was not involved in the investigation because the plane was a military aircraft.

Capt. Sarah Burns, a spokeswoman for the Marine Corps, said the KC-130 refueling tanker "experienced a mishap" but gave no further details, the AP reports.

Later, Fred Randle, county emergency management director for Leflore County, Mississippi, confirmed to CNN that all 16 of the victims were on the plane and that there were no survivors.

President Donald Trump is offering condolences to the families of those who died in a tragic military plane crash in Mississippi.

Aerial pictures taken by WLBT-TV showed the skeleton of the plane burning strongly.

"The debris field spanned a five-mile radius." according to a report on The Clarion Ledger, and that, "4,000 gallons of foam were used to combat the blaze".

"Please join Deborah and me in praying for those hurting after this tragedy", Governor Phil Bryant said in a statement on Facebook. There were also several large explosions.
