Opposition parties have choosen Mahatma's grandson and former West Bengal governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi as there candidate for the post of vice president.

In Indian politics there isn't a bigger brand name than that of Mahatma Gandhi.

While serving as the Governor of Bengal from 2004 to 2009, he "travelled incognito" and gained respect for admonishing Nandigram struggle, in West Bengal.

The sources said that after the opposition lost out in announcing its candidate to the ruling NDA, it might declare its candidate tomorrow before the ruling alliance does. Speaking to TOI, Raja said Gandhi cinformed his willingness to be the opposition nominee following a unaminous decision by all opposition parties. Leaders from 18 Opposition parties met at the Parliament House and unanimously picked Gopalkrishna. Now it is to be seen whether it supports Gopalkrishna's candidature or puts up its own.

Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, DR Manmohan Singh, JDU's Sharad Yadav and CPM's Sitaram Yechury together on Gopal Krishna Gandhi's name.

A prolific writer - he has penned several volumes on Gandhi, a play in verse on Dara Shukoh and a Hindi translation of Vikram Seths A Suitable Boy - Gandhi has also been a columnist in newspapers. Gandhi's name was mooted by Trinamool Congress MP Derek O' Brien and was endorsed by others immediately including AICC President Sonia Gandhi.

The vice presidential election, if required, will take place on August 5.

Between 1992 and 2003, when he retired from service, he discharged various diplomatic and other responsibilities including high commissioner of India to South Africa and Lesotho (1996), secretary to President of India (1997-2000), high commissioner of India in Sri Lanka (2000), ambassador of India to Norway, and Iceland (2002).
