Florida beachgoers form 80-person human chain to save stranded swimmers

The human chain that saved a family stuck in a riptide

"A lot of people were like, 'There's no way we're getting in the water, we're going to get swept out, ' but I guess they just swallowed the pride pill and they just got in", Simmons said of watching the chain of strangers grow. "When someone like me can swim, why not use your abilities to help someone?" Meanwhile, beach goers began to form a human chain, that got longer and longer as the Simmons' swam out.

That's when beachgoer Jessica Simmons grabbed a boogie board and headed out to water to help the struggling family as her husband started a human chain with other people on the beach.

"They were screaming and crying that they were stuck", said Ursrey. "I knew I could get out there and get to them".

"It's so cool to see how we have our own lives and we're constantly at a fast pace, but when somebody needs help, everybody drops everything and helps", Simmons told the Panama City News Herald.

"I witnessed many courageous citizens risking their safety and their lives to form this human chain".

One of the beachgoers named Jessica Simmons realized that someone was drowning.

"It was the most remarkable thing to see".

"I honestly thought I was going to lose my family that day", Ursrey said, according to the News Herald.

Ursrey's mother suffered a serious heart attack during the ordeal and nearly died. Simmons, along with her husband and a few other rescuers, guided the exhausted children and the rest of the family to the human chain so they could be pulled in to safety one by one. That when someone is drowning, we just can't turn our backs on them. Monroe was later released after being treated for a panic attack and Franz remains hospitalized, her daughter said. "It's not happening. We're going to get them".

"The tide knocked every bit of energy out of us", Ursrey told The Washington Post.

Simmons, an Alabama native who also happened to be having dinner by the beach, decided it was time to step in.

Ursrey (second from right), her husband, Bryan (right), 31, her mother, Barbara Franz (center), 67, and nephews immediately swam out to get them but found the too current strong, leaving nine people stranded in about 15 feet of water.
