India 'misleading the public' on Sikkim standoff: China

India-China

CONTRARY to the Chinese Government's assertion that Jawaharlal Nehru had accepted the 1890 Sino-British treaty over Sikkim to buttress Beijing's claim over the Doka La area, the former Prime Minister had pointed out to China that it was claiming sizeable part of Bhutan's territory.

The Ambassador of Bhutan has a lodged a protest with the Chinese Government through their Embassy in New Delhi on June 20.

An intensifying border row between India and China centres around a road-building project by China in the Himalayas, with both states charging the other with territorial intrusions.

"And there is no dispute between the two countries that Doklam belongs to China", he stated.

On Tuesday, a leading official newspaper in Beijing warned Chinese companies operating in India to take steps to avoid being affected by the anti-China sentiment in India.

In a press briefing at Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang also advised India to correct mistakes with practical actions.

"The Indian side is actually misleading the public by saying that the incident took place at the tri-junction point", Chinese government official reportedly said while referring to India flagging the new road as a major security concern because of its location at the "tri-junction" or area where Tibet, India and Bhutan meet.

Amid the continuing border stand-off, China also accused India of "misleading" the public by saying that Chinese had built a road near the Siliguri corridor in the Sikkim sector. "India is acting shamelessly before the global community", it said.

It said the Indian military will be "kicked out" of Doklam unless it withdraws on its own. Sikkim is wedged between Nepal, Bhutan and China.

Geng added: "The Indian troops are now in Chinese territory, and the matter remains unsettled".

Following the face-off, China last week suspended the pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar in Tibet where Indians travel via the Nathu La Pass, which has been shut.

In response, India on Friday said it has told China that the building of a road by Chinese troops in the Donglong region will have "serious security implications for India" and urged Beijing "not to change the status quo unilaterally". "China is trying its best to use historical lessons to reason with India and show sincerity in peacefully solving the problem, but if India refuses to listen, then China would have no other choice than to use a military way of solving the problem", Hu Zhiyong, a research fellow at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, told the state-run Global Times.

"We believe the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) is powerful enough to expel Indian troops out of Chinese territory". It also said that the Chinese "look down" on the Indian military, and India will "suffer greater losses than in 1962" in case of a conflict.

"Perhaps its defeat in that war was too humiliating for some in the Indian military and that is why they are talking belligerently this time", China Daily said.
