Louisiana Will Not Turn Over Voter Info to Trump Administration

Maryland Delaware and Louisiana announced Monday its intention to join the other 41 other states who have already declined the request to provide voter information

Tennessee's top elections official says state law doesn't allow him to release the voter information requested by a commission appointed by President Donald Trump to probe allegations of voter fraud.

"We ask if it is a good idea to provide even publicly available voter information that will be put into a national database, when we haven't been given information about how that data will be used, stored or secured?" said the lawyer, Carolyn Pointer.

"The best thing I can do to instill confidence among D.C. residents in our elections is to protect their personal identifiable information from the Commission on Election Integrity", said Mayor Muriel Bowser in a statement on Friday. The request included asking for the last four digits of voters' Social Security numbers.

In a statement, the Congressional Black Caucus said, "We have little doubt that if complied with, these letters - issued unilaterally without any vote or public discussion - would lead to an unprecedented, nationwide voter suppression effort". That information is public record and must be provided under state law. Trump over the weekend asked in a tweet what they had to hide.

"My response to the Commission is, you're not going to play politics with Louisiana's voter data, and if you are, then you can purchase the limited public information available by law, to any candidate running for office".

Kobach has not returned numerous requests for comment about the election integrity commission. Critics have complained that the panel is stacked with people who have long sought to make access to the polls more restrictive, including Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, the panel's vice chairman, and former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell.

A Hogan administration spokeswoman has said the State Board of Elections is independent from the governor's office.

"Secretary of State Kobach is a registered voter in Kansas", Effingham said in a statement.

More than 20 states, including Kentucky, California and NY, have declined to provide some or all of the information, saying it was unnecessary and violated privacy.

"To date, there are no cases in which it has been determined that an individual who cast a vote in the federal elections held in November 2016 was legally prohibited from doing so.", Frosh wrote.
