Firefighters Battle Blazes in California and Utah

Many residents have painful memories of the 2013 wildfire that killed 19 members of an elite firefighting crew.

In Utah, firefighters braced for more high winds as they tried to slow a stubborn wildfire that has burned 13 homes and forced the evacuation of 1,500 people from a ski resort town.

"Not only do our hearts go out to those who have been displaced, but ... as always, we are indebted to the firefighters, first responders and local community leaders who are managing and fighting this fire, as well as the many other fires throughout the state right now".

The cause of the fire, which started on Saturday 14 miles south of Prescott, was still under investigation.

Low humidity, temperatures hovering around 90 Fahrenheit and 35 miles per hour (55 kph) wind gusts are in the forecast through the weekend and may "contribute to extreme fire behavior", the National Weather Service said in an advisory.

So far, firefighters have only contained one percent of the wildfire due to wind, heat, and dry conditions.

Governor Doug Ducey issued a state of emergency for Yavapai County, freeing up funds to help fight the blaze.

Ducey's declaration also is a key requirement should federal aid resources be requested. The fire was ignited by a weed-burning torch.

California's largest fire, covering almost 10 square miles (26 sq. kilometers) in Riverside County, is 86 percent contained.

Arizona is now getting hit the hardest with a total of six fires burning, including the Goodwin fire near Prescott National Forest.

A 400-acre (162-hectare) fire in Mariposa County on the western Sierra foothills is 10 per cent surrounded.

Personnel still assigned to the fire will likely reassess their plan after four to five days of monitoring, Prescott said.

Elsewhere across the western US, a fire in the foothills north of Los Angeles was burned right up to homes before the blaze was beaten back.

Overnight Tuesday through Wednesday morning, firefighters were establishing a perimeter around Mayer with bulldozers carving fire breaks.

More than 600 Arizona firefighters are bracing for persistent windy conditions as they battle a northern Arizona fire that has charred 32 square miles (83 square kilometres ) of dense shrubbery.

Elsewhere in the West, a blaze burned in suburban Los Angeles, a complex of three major fires burned in Washington and more than 20 small lightning-sparked blazes were stopped in Idaho.

The fire has scorched 700 acres, Orange County Fire Authorities officials said Thursday. It continues to burn around 40 thousand acres of rugged terrain in Arizona's Pinaleno Mountain Range.
