U.S. to announce new enhanced aviation security measures

US to announce new enhanced aviation security measures -- sources

The measures build on a ban of electronic devices larger than mobile phones imposed in March for US -bound flights originating from 10 airports in the Middle East and North Africa.

Passengers on USA -bound flights can expect to go through a more "extensive screening process" beginning as soon as this summer in some areas, according to senior officials. It will apply to an average of 325,000 passengers a day flying to the USA from 280 airports in 105 countries, according to the agency.

"We can not play worldwide whack-a-mole", Kelly said Wednesday.

"Instead, we must put in place new measures across the board to keep the traveling public safe and make it harder for terrorists to succeed".

The U.S. electronics ban that's been in effect since March targeted 10 airports in Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.

Officials said the move was aimed at preventing an expansion of an in-cabin ban on large electronic devices that is already in force for some flights heading to the US.

The U.S. does not have jurisdiction over foreign airports, but has authority over airlines that have direct flights into the country.

Among the measures announced on Wednesday evening were enhanced screening of personal electronic devices, passengers and explosive detection.

They will include additional K9 teams and a new screening technology.

Updates will be phased in over the next few months, sources said.

The specifics of numerous new security measures will not be released due to security reasons, CNN reported. They also urged passengers to consult with their airlines before flying.

Kelly said he planned a "step by step" security enhancement plan that included short, medium-term and longer-term improvements that would take at least a year to implement fully.

The administration imposed a laptop ban earlier this year on USA -bound flights from 10 airports in the Middle East and Africa, which the DHS said was necessary because terrorists have been pursuing innovative methods to smuggle bombs into commercial flights. Airlines that failed to satisfy new security requirements could still face future in-cabin electronics restrictions, the sources said.

The decision not to impose new restrictions on laptops is a boost to US airlines who had anxious that an expansion of the ban to Europe or other locations could have caused significant logistical problems and potentially deterred some travel plans.
