'Pretty pathetic': Bernie Sanders throws darts at investigators looking into his wife

"My wife is about the most honest person I know", Sanders told CNN's Erin Burnett on Tuesday.

In an interview with CNN's Erin Burnett, Sanders would not confirm the existence of an Federal Bureau of Investigation probe, but denounced Republicans for going after his wife.

The news has been trumpeted as some sort of vindication for Hillary Clinton supporters as well as conservatives, but so far, Sanders himself has said little about the investigation that was originally brought to the FBI's attention by Donald Trump's Vermont campaign chairman Brady Toensing.

Jane Sanders was president of the school from 2004 to 2011.

Jane Sanders was once the president of Burlington College, a small liberal arts institution that shuttered past year after failing to stabilize its finances.

Bernie Sanders defended his wife Jane during a television interview amid reports the couple is under FBI investigation for bank fraud.

The Vermont senator would not confirm or deny whether an official investigation was underway, but he did deny accusations that his wife manipulated application information in an effort to secure the loan.

As the FBI investigates whether Bernie Sanders' wife committed loan fraud in obtaining funds for a Vermont college she once headed, the senator has been loath to answer questions about the matter. "When she left it, it was in better shape than it'd ever been". A person close to the senator said Sanders was represented by Rich Cassidy, a longtime lawyer for the family.

"That's not what I'm talking about today", Sanders told a reporter with the Associated Press who attempted to question him about the ongoing investigation.

In the interview on Tuesday, Sanders claimed Toensing instigated the potential probe for political reasons, saying it began five years after his wife's time at the college but just as his presidential campaign was going on - "coincidentally, no doubt", the senator said.

"The investigation was started more than a year ago under President Obama, his Attorney General Loretta Lynch, and his United States Attorney, all of whom are Democrats", he said in an email to CBS News.

Sen. Sanders ignored attempts by reporters to discuss the matter.
