Iraqi soldiers fight last pockets of Daesh in Mosul's Old City

Mosul was once Iraq's second-largest city

Though leaders say defeat of ISIS in the city is imminent, Iraqi forces have faced counterattacks through re-infiltration in once-cleared areas.

Earlier this week, a senior commander said Iraqi forces have managed to liberate two-thirds of Mosul's Old City from the grip of ISIS terrorists as they are engaged in fierce street battles to purge the country's second largest city of the militants.

"The victory announcement will come in a very short time", Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on his website on Monday evening.

Mosul, 400 km north of Iraq's capital Baghdad, has been under IS control since June 2014, when government forces abandoned their weapons and fled, enabling IS militants to take control of parts of Iraq's northern and western regions.

Earlier this month, IS launched a large-scale counterattack in Mosul that underscored the extremist group's resilience in the city despite months of heavy fighting with Iraqi forces backed by USA air power.

Federal police and elite units of the Counter-Terrorism Service have also been fighting inside the district's maze of narrow alleyways since the battle began 10 days ago.

A US -led worldwide coalition is providing air and ground support in the eight-month-old offensive.

Up to 350 militants are estimated by the Iraqi military to be dug in in the Old City among civilians in wrecked houses and crumbling infrastructure. Front lines were quiet in the Old City Tuesday as Iraqi special forces scouted the terrain.

Sporadic sniper fire could be heard, and an incoming rocket, as the troops used a drone to survey the insurgents' defences. "This attack shows that they will soon be defeated in Mosul".

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Press TV on Friday, Iraq's federal police chief voiced concerns over Daesh terrorists' use of Mosul residents as human shields.

Iraqi army soldiers and volunteer fighters from the Popular Mobilization Units, commonly known by their Arabic name, Hashd al-Sha'abi, have made sweeping gains against Daesh since launching the Mosul operation on October 17, 2016.

The Old City's stone buildings date mostly from the medieval period.
