Germany beats England on penalties, into U21 Euros final

An incident-packed first half saw England start brightly and they nearly opened the scoring through Nathaniel Chalobah after six minutes.

The matchups were confirmed on Saturday after Italy beat Germany 1-0 to win Group C, with Fiorentina's Federico Bernardeschi scoring in the first half. The Three Lions really hit their straps in the final group game as they comfortably dispatched hosts Poland 3-0.

After England's best performance of the tournament, Aidy Boothroyd will be hoping for a repeat effort against Germany.

England recorded a 3-0 aggregate win in the play-offs ahead of the 2007 tournament.

"There is work for us to do but we will only do it by getting to the latter stages of tournaments", he continued. "Everybody wanted to go, staff and players, so I'm glad we've done it".

However, in final tournament meetings, Germany have the edge.

Tammy Abraham forced German goalkeeper Julian Pollersbeck into a stunning save and when Will Hughes was tripped on the follow up it looked as if England would have a spot kick - but referee Gediminas Mazeika waved it off.

Stefan Kuntz's side has picked it self so far in the tournament but the former Germany global could make changes after defeat to Italy in the final group game.

Germany were the overwhelming favourites heading into this game, with so many technically-gifted players starring at Wolfsburg, Schalke and Bundesliga runners-up Lepizig. I expect an unchanged line-up from the side that was beaten by Italy last time out.

The Three Lions will face off against old rivals Germany in Tychy on Tuesday.

It is that sort of mentality that has made Germany's Europe's most successful nation and it is worth remembering that the last time England reached the final of this tournament, in 2009, they were thrashed by Germany in the final. We didn't use spaces well enough.

"We don't want to be fearless losers", he said.

And they nearly opened the scoring after six minutes when Will Hughes fed Gray only for Jeremy Toljan to block his shot and Pollersbeck save his follow up.

"We are looking forward to seeing who is the best".

This Germany team is not as strong as coach Stefan Kuntz would have wanted, as six players who would normally feature were called up to the senior squad to represent their country at the Confederations Cup in Russian Federation.

Ben Chillwell, Max Meyer, James Ward-Prowse (despite Pollersbeck referencing notes he had stuffed down his sock) and Nadiem Amiri then all hit confident penalties despite the growing tension in Poland.

Die Mannschaft have constantly tempted England with run-ins on the right-hand side, causing plenty of problems for the English left flank.
