Anderson will begin his new job July 12 - just a few days after Amtrak launches an ambitious rebuilding program at New York's Pennsylvania Station, which is already threatening to upend the commutes for thousands of New York City commuters.

Anderson will work alongside current CEO Wick Moorman, whom Amtrak appointed as a transitional CEO in September 2016, through the end of the year, at which point Moorman will move into an advisory position, according to Amtrak. 'Amtrak is a great company today, and I'm excited about using my experience and working with the board to make it even better. Amtrak operates at a loss, but in 2015, it benefited from a $10 billion, five-year federal allocation for passenger rail and infrastructure spending.

"Richard understands the basics of what is necessary to serve customers well", Amtrak board chairman Tony Coscia said.

"This is particularly unacceptable given the enormous payments made by our states to Amtrak to assure the state of good fix of Penn Station", Cuomo said. He assumed Delta's top job in 2007 and led the company through a merger with Northwest Airlines in 2008.During his tenure, Delta outpaced its peers in on-time performance, grew rapidly in top business markets such as NY and acquired stakes in airlines in the United Kingdom, China, Mexico and Brazil.

Moorman always meant to be a transitional CEO, he said, and he participated in the months-long search for a permanent replacement. He left the airline business after 14 years at Northwest Airlines to work in the health insurance industry - at Minnetonka-based UnitedHealth - before joining Delta and orchestrating its 2008 purchase of Northwest, his former employer.

"Richard is a best-in-class industry leader and isn't afraid to face challenges head-on", Moorman said in a statement. He is a native of Galveston, Texas, where his father worked for the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. That arrangement is created to help Anderson make the transition from airlines to passenger rail.
