Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn enjoys hero's welcome at Glastonbury Festival

The General Election campaign showed that "the elites got it wrong", Jeremy Corbyn has told a huge crowd at Glastonbury.

As is Radiohead's way, there were more than a fair few perplexing, meandering and frankly boring moments in the two-hour set, where their challenging experimental electronica and Thom Yorke's pained warbling fell flat, leading the crowd to thin out long before the end.

They did so, he said, "because they were fed up with being told they don't matter and that their generation was going to pay more to get less in education, housing, health, pensions and everything else".

"Let us be together and recognise another world is possible, if we come together to... achieve a decent, better society where everybody matters".

Chants of "Oh Jeremy Corbyn" to the tune of Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes were heard as the crowd - said by some Glastonbury regulars to be the biggest they'd ever seen - waited for his appearance.

"This festival is about coming together, it's about music, yes but it's also for environment and for peace", he said.

"I'll be interested to see what all the fuss is about".

"That means sharing the wealth".

The crowd erupted when he quoted a verse from Masque of Anarchy by the poet Shelley: "Rise like lions after slumber, in unvanquishable number, shake your chains to earth like dew, which in sleep had fallen on you - ye are many, they are few".

The Labour leader met festival staff when he arrived.

"There are many people we learn from in our lives, we learn from friends, we learn from teachers, we learn from parents and those that have written music for us".

Claire Herbert, 32, from Llanelli, South Wales, said: "I think more politicians should do things like this".

"I wanna say thank you to Michael for lending us his farm, for giving the space all those years ago, for people to come here and enjoy music, good company and inspiring thought".

Another fan who gave her name as Frankie said: "I shook his hand in a tiny tent".

Michael Vale, 28, from London, said: "I'm not sure they'd get Theresa to do this".

But Darren Garrett, from Gillingham in Dorset, took a different view.

The Labour leader will appear on the Pyramid Stage to introduce United States hip hop duo Run The Jewels before giving a talk at the Left Field stage.

The Labour leader then said a "collective" attitude had succeeded in securing healthcare as a human right in the United Kingdom following the World War I, and suggested that the same pressure be applied to overcome inequality today.
