Iran's Revolutionary Guard strikes Syria for Tehran attacks

UNCEF welcomes EU Commission's €90m education programme for minor refugees

Several Iranian news agencies reported on Sunday evening that Iran has fired several missiles at the bases of militant groups in eastern Syria.

The IRGC announced on Sunday that the medium-range ground-to-ground missiles were launched from Iran's western provinces of Kermanshah and Kordestan in response to the recent Daesh-claimed terror attacks in Tehran, which killed 18 people and injured 50 more.

Tehran was rocked by two deadly attacks on June 7 targeting Iran's Parliament building and a shrine dedicated to the republic's revolutionary founder Ayatollah Khomeini. The IRGC uses the term Takfiri to describe ISIS.

"The spilling of any pure blood will not go unanswered", the Revolutionary Guards said in the statement quoted by Tasnim.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which accused Saudi Arabia of involvement in the attacks, had also vowed to avenge the attacks.

The Islamic republic of Iran is a key ally of the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad, alongside Russian Federation and the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement of Lebanon.

That attack marked the first to hit Iran, shocking its residents who believed the chaos engulfing the rest of the Middle East would not find them in the Shiite-majority nation. The rivals are on opposite sides of violent conflicts in Syria, Yemen and elsewhere.
