Pence hires outside counsel to deal with Russia probe inquiries

Puerto Rico Governor Presses Congress for Statehood

"The vice president is focused entirely on his duties ... and looks forward to a swift conclusion of this matter", Agen said.

An aide tells NPR the decision to hire an outside lawyer has been under consideration for weeks, and Pence chose to go forward with it earlier this week.

The lawyer, Richard Cullen, is a former Virginia attorney general and a former United States attorney for the eastern district of Virginia.

The Washington Post, citing five people briefed on the requests who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence, Mike Rogers, the head of the National Security Agency, and Richard Ledgett, the former deputy director at the NSA, had agreed to be interviewed by Mueller's investigators as early as this week.

Vice President Pence has lawyered up. They declined to say what had sparked Pence's decision to hire an outside lawyer and referred all questions concerning the Russian Federation investigation to Cullen's office. His official biography from McGuireWoods lists, in addition to his time at the Justice Department, his experience working for former Sen.

Last month, Trump hired his own private attorney to deal with the congressional committee inquiries and the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe that is now in the hands of special counsel. He has represented Trump for years in civil matters, including a libel suit against a Trump biographer that was dismissed.

Vice President Mike Pence will travel to Central and South America in August.

The Washington Post was first to report the news. Former FBI Director James Comey told Congress last week he believes he was sacked by Trump to undermine the agency's Russian Federation probe.
