Clinging on to Her Job, Britain's May Appoints New Ministers

"Theresa May is a dead woman walking".

The unionist party's leader told Sky News she plans to act in the national interest, saying: "We want to do what's right for the whole of the United Kingdom".

The Conservatives won 318 House of Commons seats in Thursday's election, eight short of an outright majority.

Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn went on the offensive in an interview with the Daily Mirror on Saturday, vowing to oust Prime Minister Theresa May of the Conservatives "within a matter of days".

"Imagine she survives until autumn of next year", he said. Some say her failure means the government must now take a more flexible approach to the divorce.

People demonstrate in Parliament Square against the possible Conservative and DUP (Democratic Unionist Party) coalition government following the Britain's general election result, in London, Saturday June 10, 2017. A hung parliament with confidence and supply agreements looms.

"The talks so far have been positive". DUP leader Arlene Foster told Sky News she would meet May on Tuesday.

Hogan said another British election might be needed to give a government a mandate to make the hard decisions required to secure a Brexit deal, as May was "very damaged" as a result of the poll.

The DUP is "likely to increase the pressure on Theresa May to secure a comprehensive free trade agreement" in place of its single market membership, said Stephen Booth of the Open Europe think tank.

The DUP is strongly socially conservative, at odds with Conservative policies.

A Tory-DUP alliance will be so fragile that it may even have collapsed under the weight of disapproval from the prime minister's own MPs by the time this article is published. "Just to be clear, we will act in the national interest".

The two parties are broadly politically aligned, but it remains to be seen what price the DUP will demand for its support.

Joining forces with the hardline unionist Protestant party also threatens London's neutrality in Northern Ireland, which is key to the delicate balance of power in a province once plagued by violence.

Anand Menon, professor of politics at King's College London, said her lack of a parliamentary majority made it far more likely that Britain would leave the European Union without a deal.

Owen Paterson, a senior Conservative lawmaker, said "let's see how it pans out", when asked about May's future.

However he acknowledged that the party would have to abandon much of the programme set out in the general election manifesto as it would no longer be able to get it through Parliament.

"He has been inundated with messages of support".

But Anna Soubry, a Conservative MP who campaigned ahead of last year's referendum for Britain to stay in the European Union, disagreed.

Newspaper headlines saw her as just clinging on.

In a measure of the desperation in Conservative ranks, Brady, who is chairman of the influential 1922 committee of Conservative lawmakers, suggested the party could end up relying on support from pro-Brexit opposition members of Parliament. The main opposition Labour Party surpassed expectations by winning 262.

Many of those Conservatives now opposing May are those who wanted to remain in the EU. In order to do so, we also need to reassure working-class communities who traditionally voted Labour that we are serious about security and the defence of the realm.

But Johnson reacted to media speculation on Twitter by dismissing any rebellion: "I am backing Theresa May".
