Unseeded Ostapenko wins French Open for 1st title

French Open 2017 Jelena Ostapenko beats Simona Halep to win her maiden Grand Slam title

- At 20 years and two days, Ostapenko is the youngest first-time grand slam champion since Svetlana Kuznetsova won the 2004 U.S. Open.

Unseeded Jelena Ostapenko has won the French Open, beating No. 3 Simona Halep 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to claim her first tour-level title.

Halep, who was in the final for the second time after losing to Sharapova in 2014, would have become world No 1 with victory and she seemed on course when she led by a set and 3-0, soaking up the Ostapenko pressure and making her hit one more ball every time.

The Latvian, 20, hit 54 winners on her way to a "dream" 4-6 6-4 6-3 win over Romania's Simona Halep.

"When I first played on grass I didn't like it, I really didn't understand it", she told a small group of reporters following her shock Paris win as she recalled playing on grass at Roehampton in England as a 15-year-old. The unseeded Latvian upset Simona Halep with a ferocious performance full of both winners and unforced errors.

Halep came in as the favourite as she had more big-match experience, having been runner-up to Maria Sharapova in a tight three-setter in 2014.

If Halep wins, she also will move up to No. 1 in the rankings for the first time.

STAT OF THE DAY: Ostapenko launched an impressive tally of 54 winners in the final to take her tally to 299 for the tournament.

"At some point I was like a spectator on court", Halep said. "I am proud of her!" said Vejonis, adding that she has demonstrated a unique achievement in Latvian sports. I was nervous on the inside but I came back fighting and I'm really happy.

Ostapenko said she was amazed by her win.

The 20-year-old, ranked 47, had never been beyond the third round at a grand slam before nor won a senior title.

"She danced, swam, played tennis, she played football because she had so much energy". Also in the deciding moments, I played pretty well in those games. I think I still can not believe it, because it was my dream and now it came true.

Halep consolidated with a gritty hold for 3-0 before Ostapenko fought off a trio of break points to stall her rival's momentum and spark an incredible comeback.

With her signature powerful forehand, Ostapenko nailed 14 winners, also suffering 23 unforced errors.

From Halep's point of view her first time out of the gates at a Slam final, she was surrounded by an entourage of around 50 family and friends, and this time she kept it simple - and it nearly worked.

"This one hurts a lot more than when I lost in the final three years ago because I realise more what has happened". I think I have the game.
