Coroner: Nevada woman says child's body in Illinois garage

An investigation is underway after a child's body was found in a detached garage in Centreville

We found IL court records showing Quate was arrested on a warrant in July of 2000 and found guilty on two felony charges of burglary.

Officials told KLAS that the child's body was found so badly decomposed that authorities weren't able to determine the gender. The woman's husband, Jason Scott Quate, 34, is jailed in Las Vegas.

The man accused of forcing his wife into prostitution after killing his 6-year-old daughter and dumping her body in a garage in Centreville says none of that is true.

According to CBS affiliate KMOV, the unidentified woman said that she moved with her husband, 34-year-old Jason Quate, and their two teenage daughters from IL to Las Vegas about two years ago. Investigators believe the child was killed in 2013.

Quate was being held in custody on suspicion of felony sex trafficking and living from the earnings of a prostitute. The mother reportedly told investigators Quate had sexually abused their two teen daughters. Quate said he spanked her, unaware she had Salisbury steak in her mouth, and she choked to death. A day earlier, he told KSNV-TV in Las Vegas that his wife had told him she had put the girl up for adoption.

In his interview with the newspaper, he repeatedly referred to what happened with his daughter as "horrible". "I begged her to get a real job", he said.

Quate said he and his wife were afraid to call police out of fear their other children would be taken from them.

"She stated that her husband was extremely abusive and had forced her to go out and solicit herself for prostitution and also was physically abusive to the children", said Lt. Raymond Spencer, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police.

The discovery was made Tuesday in Centreville, a suburb southeast of St. Louis.

Neighbors told the Belleville News-Democrat that the small house in Centreville with boarded-up windows has been vacant for more than two years. Both children were taken into protective custody.

She said she could not yet release the nature of the charges pending against the man who had been arrested.

According to Las Vegas police Quate's two other children were found in the couple's home in Vegas where they had obvious physical signs of abuse and had not been allowed to leave the house.

Quate is due in court Friday morning for a hearing at 9:30 a.m. CST.

Las Vegas police said the two surviving girls were kept inside virtually all the time and didn't attend school. St. Clair County State's Attorney Brendan Kelly didn't immediately respond to messages about the warrant.

Quate declined an interview request on Thursday from The Associated Press.

Neighbors told a reporter from KTNV-TV in Las Vegas that they frequently heard yelling coming from the apartment.

Any potential homicide investigation would be handled by St. Clair County law enforcement.
