USA diplomat in China quits over Trump's Paris treaty pull-out

On Tuesday, the network morning shows were delighted by the news that diplomat David Rank had resigned from his post as Acting U.S. Ambassador to China over President Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate deal. Only the United States, Syria and Nicaragua (which didn't think the agreement went far enough, environmentally) did not.

On NBC's Today, co-host Matt Lauer proclaimed to viewers: "There is some more fallout this morning over President Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement".

Lukens said in an email that he did not obtain clearance from the State Department for the tweets he posted on Sunday on the embassy's Twitter account because it was standard practice to express support to a host country after a terrorist attack.

He was No. 2 at the embassy, in charge pending the arrival of Trump's new ambassador to China, former Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, who was confirmed by the Senate last month.

As President Donald Trump strains alliances and relationships around the world, some of the nation's top career diplomats are breaking publicly with him, in what amounts to a quiet revolt by a cadre of public servants known for their professional discretion.

From 2011 to 2012, he was political counsellor at the USA embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, and was director of the State Department's bureau of Afghanistan Affairs. Lewis Lukens is the top US diplomat in the United Kingdom because the Trump administration has not yet nominated an ambassador. So he has resigned.

BEIJING-The top-ranking US diplomat in Beijing resigned over President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord, depleting already thinned-out State Department ranks and depriving Washington of one of its most experienced China hands. "She gushed: ".he reportedly said that as, quote, 'a parent, patriot, and a Christian, ' he could not in good conscience play a roll in implementing Mr. Trump's decision".

President Xi Jinping had urged Donald Trump to keep the U.S. in the Paris accord, but said that his country and France must "protect" the deal. Under the Obama administration, climate change was incorporated into the daily business of diplomacy at every level, and Rank was known for his personal concern about the environment.

JOHN KARL: Yeah, this is the second time in two days, this is now the latest. So something of a revolt in the foreign service.
