British Police Name Third Attacker From Saturday's Rampage In London

One London attacker had been investigated

The mother of the Italian-Moroccan jihadi who helped carry out the London Bridge attack last weekend that killed 8 people has said she is "ashamed" to mourn her son. "I say I can understand their pain because as a mother I feel it too", she said. When he was stopped and questioned, he reportedly told police officers: "I'm going to be a terrorist". "From his face, from his look, I could see there was a radicalization, as you say".

British police have confirmed the identity of two of the three attackers but had been retaining the name of the third while investigations into possible accomplices and contacts continued. Eight people were killed and dozens were injured.

Subsequently, two of the attackers would be identified as Khuram Shazad Butt and Rachid Redouane.

Police were alerted to his involvement when an Irish identification card was found on the body of one of the suspects following the attack on Saturday night.

Butt was the office manager according to a statement from Auriga Holdings, the holding company. KFC spokeswoman Jules Pars said Wednesday that Butt worked there in 2015. Several British media reports on Tuesday, however, said he had been denied political asylum in Britain in 2009 but allowed to work years afterward in Ireland after he married his British wife.

Citing intelligence sources, Italian dailies Corriere della Sera and La Repubblica said Zaghba was met at the Bologna airport by Italian intelligence agents each time he arrived in Italy to visit his mother after his initial run-in with Bologna airport authorities on March 15, 2016.

Italian officials said suspicions about him were shared with British authorities and his name was subsequently listed in the European-wide intelligence-sharing system. He was also stopped at London's Stansted airport in January, but let go.

Zaghba visited her at her home near Bologna several times and in March 2016, after being stopped at Bologna airport, he was investigated for possible global terrorist activity but released, according to the newspaper. However, they did not arrest him because he held an Italian passport, and "having extremist material on a phone isn't against the law in Italy", according to the CNN report. Authorities said he aroused suspicion because he tried to board a flight to Turkey with a one-way ticket and a small backpack.

Butt, a father-of-two who appeared on Channel 4 documentary The Jihadis Next Door, was also reported to the anti-terror hotline in 2015 for showing signs of "extremism or radicalisation".

Valeria Collina was quoted by Italian weekly news magazine L'Espresso as saying she last spoke to her son Thursday and now realizes it was a goodbye call. "You should not even look at anything a little bit odd on the internet, you should see the right people and do the right things and it seemed like he was doing it", according to audio of her group interview provided by the ANSA news agency. She has already been criticised by both Jeremy Corbyn and London mayor Sadiq Khan for implementing cuts to the police force during her time as Home Secretary. She also said she agreed with the Muslim religious leaders who refused to recite funeral prayers for the attackers.

When May called the election in April, her Conservatives led in opinion polls by 20 points or more.
