UK Conservatives Set to Lose Seats in General Election

The Conservatives' lead over Labour has been cut to a single point according to one new opinion poll - amid sharp differences between pollsters over the state of the General Election race.

But Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn criticised her refusal to debate with him directly.

Dr Lelliott said it was only a few weeks ago that some key allies of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn were saying Labour would be lucky to get 200 seats.

The Conservative leader was accused of "broken promises" for calling an early election for June 8 after she had repeatedly said she would not, and for a U-turn on a key manifesto pledge on elderly social care.

Asked if he would still like to be finance minister after the election, Hammond told the BBC: "Of course I would, that's a silly question".

The two, who did not appear on screen together, but rather in separate segments on a BBC programme called Question Time. "We all got it wrong in 2015 and we are all trying different methods to get it right this year", said Anthony Wells, a research director at YouGov. It is subtitled: "On June 9th, this man could be Prime Minister".

Pressed on whether he would be prepared to push the nuclear button Mr Corbyn was heckled as he refused to say whether he would launch a retaliatory nuclear strike if the occasion arose, saying "I'd view the idea of having to use a nuclear weapon as something that was resulting in a failure in the whole world's diplomatic system". Corbyn replied: "There has to be no first use and there has to be a process of nuclear disarmament", he said.

"If we did use it, millions are going to die".

Mrs May refused to give a figure for how much she would be willing to pay the European Union in Brexit "divorce" settlement, and she was also challenged over a U-turn on controversial social care plans for England, which saw an as-yet unknown cap added to elderly care costs.

Mr Corbyn said Labour was "not looking to do deals with anybody" when asked if he would seek the support of the SNP.

The Labour leader attacked Mrs May for failing to sign a joint letter with leaders of Germany, France and Italy condemning President Donald Trump's decision to pull the U.S. out of the Paris Accord on climate change.

She added she would continue to work for a Labour party that "once again can deserve your confidence". Survation interviewed 1,049 United Kingdom adults online on June 3.
