Mickelson to miss US Open for daughter's graduation

Phil Mickelson said Saturday that he will skip the upcoming U.S. Open to attend his daughter Amanda's high school graduation.

The 46-year-old pro has finished in the top 10 just twice in 13 events thus far this season.

It appears he will not break his duck at Erin Hills in 2017, due to the tournament's first round on June 15 clashing with his daughter Amanda's graduation from Pacific Ridge School in Carlsbad, California.

Mickelson has not officially withdrawn yet but it would take an unforeseen change of scheduling to get him to change his mind.

"So my daughter is graduating and she's the school president, she'll be giving the commencement speech for the school, and I'm gonna be there", Mickelson told reporters following Saturday's round.

Mickelson said Amanda has always been supportive of his quest to win the U.S. Open, but "it's one of those things that you just show up".

"(Or) if there was even a two-or-three hour (weather delay at the golf) I could very possibly make it".

The US Open is the last major title that Mickelson needs to win in order to be the sixth man to win a career Grand Slam.

The 46-year-old is running out of chances to complete the career grand slam, making the decision more hard.

On the Tuesday before the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion, Mickelson flew home to attend Amanda's eighth-grade gradution the following day, and made it back for his Thursday morning tee time. I didn't want the USGA (US Golf Association) to be caught off guard and I wanted the alternate to know he will most likely be in. "It wasn't really something that we discussed, because it really wasn't much of a decision".
