Merkel: Europe must stay united in face of ally uncertainty

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Europe must now plot its own course

In Brussels, Donald Trump said that Germany was "very bad" because of its trade surplus (Germany is Europe top exporter) and the fact that "ome German auto companies manufacture in Mexico for importing into the United States, even though many of them produce cars in American factories with American workers", as reported in The New York Times.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel holds a beer mug she received as a present during an election campaign of her Christian Democratic Union, CDU, and the Christian Social Union, CSU, in Munich, southern Germany, Sunday, May 28, 2017. Trump tweeted on Saturday that he would "make a decision" about the agreement next week.

The president has previously suggested he believes climate change is a hoax, tweeting in 2012: "The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make USA manufacturing non-competitive".

And Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel, also a Social Democrat, said Monday that if the Trump administration "finds pushing through national interests more important than an global order... then I say that the West has become smaller - it has at least become weaker".

Mrs Merkel has just returned from a G7 summit which wound up on Saturday without a deal between the United States and the other six major advanced nations on upholding the Paris climate change agreement.

In April, Trump was said to be considering an executive order which would pull the United States out of NAFTA.

U.S. -German relations "are a strong pillar of our foreign and security policy, and Germany will continue working to strengthen these relations", Seibert said.

Obama's participation in a forum with Merkel last Thursday came hours before her meeting with Trump in Brussels at the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit.

In a speech in Berlin on Monday, Merkel showed how seriously she is concerned about Washington's dependability under President Donald Trump by repeating the message she delivered a day earlier that the days when Europe could completely count on others were "over to a certain extent".

"We Europeans must fight for more climate protection, fewer weapons and against religious (fanaticism), otherwise the Middle East and Africa will be further destabilised", Gabriel said.

While Germany and Europe would strive to remain on good terms with America and Britain, "we have to fight for our own destiny", Merkel went on.

Merkel emphasised the need for continued friendly relations with the USA and Britain and also stressed the importance of being good neighbours "wherever that is possible, including with Russian Federation, but also with others". But growing frustration with U.S. President Donald Trump, a determination to reform Europe with France's incoming leader and political considerations closer to home convinced Merkel to take a stand, senior German and European officials said.

"As we begin the negotiations about leaving the EU, we will be able to reassure Germany and other European countries that we are going to be a strong partner to them in defence and security and, we hope, in trade", Britain's interior minister Amber Rudd told BBC radio.

"We Europeans truly have to take our fate into our own hands", she added.
