Intel spat adds to Israeli concerns about Trump visit

The wall is in the Old City, a part of east Jerusalem, which the US and most of the world consider to be occupied territory.

The group opposing the step is headed by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Defense Secretary James Mattis, and National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, said Haaretz. Officially, the United Nations, the United States and others consider the Old City and East Jerusalem occupied territory and do not recognize Israel's claim to sovereignty over it.

In an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network, the U.S.'s ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, said she believes the Western Wall is in Israel and that the USA embassy should be moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem - another controversial story.

Stops on the upcoming trip include Saudi Arabia, Israel and the Vatican; places sacred to three of the worlds major religions.

"What is most important on Israel's part is for Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu make clear to President Trump that Israel expects the embassy to be moved to Jerusalem when Trump visits next week", continued Ben-Dahan.

Despite concerns over Trump's shifting policy positions on the conflict, the decrease in popularity among Jews did not translate into a notable increase in Israelis believing the president to be more pro-Palestinian, which increased from three to four percent.

Trump is scheduled to visit Israel on May 22-23.

The visit will be a significant foreign policy test for Trump, who has yet to demonstrate a firm grasp of the nuances of Middle East diplomacy.

Trump said as a candidate he would move the embassy to Jerusalem, but now says he's studying the issue.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu greeted new United States Ambassador to Israel, David Friedman welcoming him to Jerusalem "our eternal capital", on Tuesday.

In recent days, USA officials have tamped down expectations of an embassy move, reportedly emphasizing to their Israeli counterparts that Trump remains committed to relocating the embassy by the end of his first term, even if he decides next month to extend the presidential order freezing the implementation of the move.

"I am not real sure what happened with that issue", she added.

"Like [former President Harry] Truman, Mr. Trump must contend with well-entrenched anti-Israel bureaucrats at the State Department who will try to use their positions to make moving the embassy hard". That distinction between Jerusalem and Israel reflects the US position that the city's fate is an issue for Israelis and Palestinians to work out through future peace negotiations.

Reps. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., and Francis Rooney, R-Fla., marked the celebration by introducing a nonbinding resolution celebrating Israel's capture of the eastern portions of Jerusalem in the Six-Day War in 1967.

Dennis Ross, a veteran former Middle East negotiator who has been consulted by Trump's aides, said the president must avoid raising hopes for a quick resolution of the conflict that has eluded successive US administrations.
