Exeter champions after extra-time win over Wasps

Wasps star Kurtley Beale will miss Saturday's Aviva Premiership final against Exeter at Twickenham.

The sides are nearly impossible to split, so we look at the recent head-to-head record to see if it offers up any answers.

Much of the final's build-up had been about the potential dominance of the Exeter pack, and those comments appeared justified as Chiefs gained two penalties inside the opening four minutes to pile pressure on Wasps.

Ten tries were scored and Exeter managed to salvage some points from the game despite playing the final 35 minutes with only 14 players.

Short is Exeter's top try-scorer this season, scoring 11 tries in the Premiership and going over 14 times in all competitions.

Congratulations to Exeter Cheifs, and of course to Gareth Steenson.

This included a hat-trick for Italy global Michele Campagnaro, plus a try apiece for Simmonds, Mitch Lees, Shaun Malton, Lachie Turner and Stuart Townsend.

However, they survived, then thrived, building gradually within their means, bringing in the odd experienced signing while producing a pipeline of academy players into the first team and have become every fan's second-favourite club.

Wasps finished the regular season at the top of the table on points difference ahead of the Chiefs and they played out a 35-35 draw in February, but it was the Devon club that edged an epic showdown in the London sun.

The game also marked England worldwide Danny Cipriani's return to Wasps after he rejoined from Sale Sharks over the summer.

Dan Robson and Tommy Taylor got the other scores for the home side but it was Exeter who had started the game brighter, with tries from Thomas Waldrom and scrum-half Will Chudley.

The Chiefs captain struck gold in extra time with his match-winning strike and the fly-half was calm throughout the game.

"I think Steeno was right, it did feel different after the game last week", said Baxter.

Exeter thought it had won it five minutes from the end of extra-time but the television match official saw no evidence that the ball had been grounded.

And indeed since then the Exeter players have all continued to make a name for themselves through a series of impressive performances this season.

In what was an enthralling final, 80 minutes of rugby couldn't separate the sides as it was locked at 20-20 following the final whistle.

First-half tries by Daly's Lions colleague Jack Nowell and full-back Phil Dollman - plus two Steenson conversions - built a 14-3 advantage, yet Gopperth's touchdown just before half-time appeared to tilt the balance psychologically.
