NFL To (Finally) Loosen Celebration Penalties

Top Sports

The changes were approved amid the NFL's renewed emphasis on making their on-field product fan-friendly.

May 23, 2017Prolonged acts, miming weapons, offensive gestures, sexually suggestive stuff still expected to be banned.

Now the interesting part will be whether owners - a group which skews rather older than players - are willing to go along.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has been listening, and spoke with more than 80 current and former players about coming to a resolution.

Brown was penalized twice last season for excessive celebration much to the chagrin of the coaching staff, or at least Danny Smith.

A concern is that it could lead to more tie games, but the stats show it will not have a major effect.

It appears that the National Football League cares about fun again.

"Players have told us they want more freedom to be able to express themselves", Goodell wrote.

Three other games were won in overtime on the final five minutes, games that would be ties this year. Both games were played at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

In terms of roster moves, the National Football League chose to eliminate the reduction from 90 players to 75 players that occurs in between Week 3 and Week 4 of the preseason. There will now only be one cut, from 90 players to the final 53-man roster. The NFL also would have had to waive a rule that prohibits a Super Bowl being played at a stadium before it has hosted two full regular seasons. If celebrations are deemed a violation by on-field officials, players could still be penalized under existing unsportsmanlike conduct and taunting violations, as well as fined.
