Penguins strike early, rout Senators 7-0 to take 3-2 lead

The Penguins seized a 3-2 lead over the visiting Senators in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference final series with a chance to advance by winning Tuesday in the Canadian capital.

Pittsburgh Penguins coach Mike Sullivan calls it "getting to our game".

Senators coach Guy Boucher said after the game - a 7-0 Pittsburgh victory - that he decided not to play Karlsson in the third period with the Senators trailing 5-0.

Game 6 is Monday night in Nashville. He picked up his second career postseason shutout.

The momentum Pittsburgh generated did more than carry over. The defenseman who scored just once during the regular season zipped home his second in two games 8:14 into the first.

At 16:04, a Nick Bonino shot glanced in off Rust's leg for a 3-0 lead.

Jonathan Bernier took over and stopped 16 shots in his first appearance in almost two weeks for the Ducks, who already were without 30-goal scorers Rickard Rakell and Patrick Eaves before losing Gibson to a lower-body injury.

Condon came on for Anderson in the second but it didn't exactly provide a jolt. When Cullen beat him 1:54 into the second to make it 5-0, the competitive portion of the afternoon over.

The Senators head back home on the brink of elimination for the first time in their postseason.

Ottawa forward Derick Brassard and defenseman Cody Ceci also were not on the bench for the third period. The penalty kill turned the Senators away four times and extended Ottawa's power play drought to 0 for 29. The rest of the Senators insist they'll be ready too. Crosby's assist on Kessel's goal gave him 100 career playoff assists. Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin played in his 141st postseason game, surpassing Jaromir Jagr for the most in franchise history.

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Bryan Rust returned to the lineup on Sunday, but the team was still not at full strength because defenseman Justin Schultz and forward Patric Hornqvist were ruled out with injuries, while forward Conor Sheary was a healthy scratch. 4, Pittsburgh, Wilson 2 (Rowney, Bonino), 18:17.
