Hack EVM, poll panel dares political parties

New Delhi:The long-awaited EVM Challenge to establish that the Electronic Voting Machines can not be tampered will start from June 3, Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi announced on Saturday.

Amid doubts raised about EVMs by political parties, the Commission held a demonstration of the EVMs equipped with VVPAT machines to prove its point that they can not tampered with or manipulated either at the manufacturing stage or during polling, storing and counting.

Even as Zaidi was addressing the press conference, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who had levelled allegations of EVM tampering, said the commission had never provided parties with machines to prove their charges. For example, participants will not be allowed to remove parts and replace it with other components because in such a case, the machine will become an entirely different machine.

After allegations of Electronic Voting Machines' tampering, the Election Commission threw an open challenge to hack the machines.

Each participating group will be given four hours to prove its claim.

The BSP and the AAP had alleged that the machines used in the recent assembly elections were tampered with and favoured the BJP.

He said the commission is considering a demand of parties to increase the time the paper trail slip is visible to the voter as an acknowledgement receipt for the party he voted for in the election. "Replacing any component would amount to re-creating the device", Zaidi said.

During a recent all-party meeting called on the EVM issue, the Election Commission had also said that all future elections in India will make use of VVPAT machines. Later, they also won the civic polls in Delhi.

In the demonstration on Saturday, the Election Commission reiterated its claim that voting the machines were tamper-proof.

Each political party will be allowed to choose a maximum of four EVMs of their choice from any four polling stations out of the five States where Assembly elections were held recently.

The Aam Aadmi Party had earlier sought permission to change the motherboard of an EVM, something it claimed could be done in 90 seconds.
