Wrong-way driver killed, 2 hurt in head-on crash in Maryland

Maryland State Police released several audio recordings of those calls that detail the frantic moments before the wrong-way crash that left two people dead and a toddler in the hospital.

The mother also died and the infant was taken by helicopter for injuries.

Laura Ashley Murphy, 22, of Salisbury, was the driver of the black 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan involved in the crash. Murphy was declared dead at the scene. Police say the preliminary investigation suggests the vehicle crossed the median before crashing.

A double yellow line extends the length of the road, however, the west end of the road is connected to an exit ramp off of Route 50 for eastbound travelers meant only for one-way traffic. The other person in the vehicle, a 26-year-old woman from Kingston, was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Plymouth, and later died from her injuries. A woman was driving on the wrong side of the road, police said, when she struck another vehicle head on.

For unknown reasons, Murphy was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of USA 50 in Annapolis. He was flown to Shock Trauma, where he died.

Skidmore was driving a silver 2016 Mercedes SUV eastbound on US 50 when he was hit head-on by a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.

A third vehicle was involved in the crash. The vehicle crashed across a grassy median, entered the westbound lanes and then rolled over into an infield near one of the highway's off ramps.

Investigators are using 911 calls in an effort to piece together what happened before Wednesday's fatal crash on Route 50 in Anne Arundel County.

Annapolis traffic was hit particularly hard as police redirected cars trying to get on Route 50 to the Naval Academy Bridge through downtown Annapolis. Westbound Route 50 has been reopened.
