Nigeria identifies 82 freed Chibok girls; parents await word

While the Chibok Girls plight was well publicised with figures such as Michelle Obama calling for their release, there are thousands more victims of Boko Haram.

The list was published early today after Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari met with the young women before announcing he was leaving for London immediately for medical checkups as fears over his health continue.

A man carrying a Boko Haram flag walks past a group of 82 Chibok girls, who were held captive for three years by Islamist militants, as the girls wait to be released in exchange for several militant commanders, near Kumshe, Nigeria, May 6, 2017.

Boko Haram has been blamed for the deaths of more than 20,000 people and displacement of 2.3 million others in Nigeria since their insurgency in 2009.

Finally, some more of the Chibok schoolgirls are coming home.

She thanked all the agencies involved in the negotiations for the release of the girls.

Twenty-one girls were released in October 2016 as part of the same negotiation process, and a further three girls escaped or were rescued by January.

Amnesty International quickly released a statement urging the government to respect the girls' privacy and not subject them to a media circus. Some must undergo surgery, she said. Despite those that have been released, there are still 113 girls that are unaccounted for.

None of the 21 girls who were released in October have been able to move back home, and almost seven months later they are still being held on a military re-integration programme. He says he can not travel the long distance from his home in northern Nigeria to the capital without the government's invitation and assurance that he will see her.

They did go back to Chibok at Christmas time previous year, but they were held in the house of a local politician and the families had to go there to see them.

The girls said they wanted to go back to school so a nine-month reintegration programme was designed for them, the minister said.

Mrs Buhari also advised the girls to let go of the past and acquire skills to be self-reliant for the future. "We will never prevent them from seeing their daughters", Alhassan said.

"We however want to appeal to the federal government not to relent on efforts to bring home the remaining girls and any other person still being held hostage by the terrorists".

Boko Haram took the girls because they are against children - especially girls - getting an education, like they do in the UK.
