Chelsea Manning has been liberated

In a statement to ABC News, Manning said: "I appreciate the wonderful support that I have received from so many people across the world over these past years". Whatever is ahead of me, is far more important than the past, The Guardian quoted Manning, as saying.

Manning tweeted a photo, writing, "first steps of freedom".

After the sentencing, the ex-intelligence agent changed her name to Chelsea Manning and identified as transgender.

Among the material from her was a 2007 gunsight video of a US Apache helicopter firing at suspected insurgents in Iraq, killing a dozen people, including two Reuters news workers.

The 29-year-old had her jail sentence commuted in a final act of clemency by former U.S. president Barack Obama before he left office in January.

United States army intelligence official Ms Manning, who was born Bradley Manning, passed classified government materials to WikiLeaks.

"It was by far the longest sentence given to any whistleblower in USA history", Pulse said, saying the film would depict "the journey of her fight for survival and dignity, and her transition from prisoner to a free woman". She was given a 35-year sentence of a possible maximum sentence of 90 years. Her whereabouts after that were unknown.

Manning said she released the documents to WikiLeaks because she felt the US military was ignoring the trauma that many civilians suffered from as a result of war.

Manning remains on active duty status pending the conclusion of her appeals.

After seven years in captivity, military whistleblower Chelsea Manning is free.

"We can all finally truly celebrate the strength and heroism she has shown in surviving and sharing her truth and life with all of us", Chase Strangio, Manning's attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union, said in Wednesday's statement that included Manning's post-release comments.

Manning, who already has a Twitter account that she updated regularly while in prison, quickly acclimated herself to new forms of social media upon her release.

"For the first time, I can see a future for myself as Chelsea", she said. In one of his last acts in office, President Obama commuted most of her remaining sentence.

Manning twice attempted suicide a year ago at Fort Leavenworth, a male military prison.

Speaking to the BBC, Manning's friend, the journalist Glenn Greenwald - who was involved in the publication of leaks from Edward Snowden - said she faced a hard life outside prison.

Chelsea Manning, formerly known as a male officer called Bradley Manning, was arrested in 2010 after leaking 700,000 military files including a battlefield video and diplomatic cables to WikiLeaks, the largest leak of classified data in USA history.
