Woman killed saving daughter on Mother's Day in NY

Lindenhurst Mom Fatally Hit by Car on Mother's Day

According to NBC New York, 55-year-old Diane Aluska was walking on a sidewalk with her 16-year-old daughter Sunday when a Toyota Corolla jumped the curb and struck her.

Riolo was backing out of a diagonal parking spot when she drove onto the sidewalk, in reverse, and then hit the women.

Mother and daughter were struck Sunday by a Toyota Corolla that 80-year-old driver Ann Riolo had accidentally put in reverse as she was leaving a bakery in Lindenhurst.

Riolo suffered injuries during the crash but has not been charged. "The one that was lying over there on the ground, she was looking for her mother, she just kept screaming for her mom", says eyewitness Victoria Fisher Kelly. I knew she wasn't going to... survive. "When I got there, they had her on a stretcher". She couldn't be devastated right before her surgery. So much so that she would give her own life for them if she had to, and there is simply no greater love than this.

"There is no doubt she saved her daughter's life", he said.

"Who the heck would want that to happen on Mother's Day", a neighbor said. She was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately did not make it.

The mother and daughter had just attended Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church and were walking down South Wellwood Avenue at 9:15 a.m., officials said.

"The mom was hands down a hero". This past Mother's Day, however, a NY mother made the ultimate sacrifice for her teenage daughter. Her daughter was treated for her injuries and is not likely to die. "There are no words".

"Diane was a valued member of our Town Clerk's Office where she served residents of the town with dedication, compassion and a big smile".

WABC reports that Diane was pinned underneath the vehicle after the accident, and bystanders rushed to push the auto off Diane to rescue her. He said it did not at all.

"I knew that I had witnessed something very, very tragic and sad". Diane Aluska was pronounced dead at the hospital. The physical recovery will require follow-up operations. "Our Town of Babylon family is heart broken as we mourn the death of Diane Aluska who was tragically killed this morning", he said.

No charges have been filed in the case, and there has been no response to the driver.

Police say the incident "appears to be non-criminal" and "just a awful accident".
