Renault stops production at some sites after cyber attack

Map locates top 20 countries affected in the first hours of WannaCry’s ransomware cyberattack 3c x 2 inches 146 mm x 50

Businesses around the world scrambled on Saturday to prepare for a renewed cyber attack, convinced that a lull in a computer offensive that has stopped auto factories, hospitals, schools and other organizations in around 100 countries was only temporary.

However, manufacturing remained suspended at the Douai plant in northern France, where Renault builds pricier models including its Talisman sedan and Espace crossover, the company said. That plant makes the Trafic van and its rebadged sisters.

French carmaker Renault RENA.PA was hit by the global ransomware cyber attack that has infected tens of thousands of computers in almost 100 countries, a spokeswoman said on Saturday.

In a statement earlier today, Nissan said: "Production started on schedule today across all our European operations". Lost production will be made up, he added, and the financial impact has yet to be calculated.

Romania's intelligence service SRI officially confirmed the attack on Saturday and said that various institutions and companies in Romania were affected. In turn, Renault and Nissan's system operations were questioned. The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority said no cases of ransom attacks have been reported in the UAE.

The attack took place on Friday evening and spread quickly through computers with the Windows operating system.

Renault bought Romania's Automobile Dacia, an ailing state company at the time, in 1999. The probe covers "Renault and other possible victims", the source said.

Renault stopped production across several of its European plants as a result of the attack, which encrypted data on computers until a ransom was paid, according to a Renault spokesman who spoke with Automotive News.
