Trump was right the first time: the us embassy in Israel should be located in that country's capital, as it is, to my knowledge, in every other country in the world.
Just days ahead of President Donald Trump's Middle East trip, the Palestinian envoy to the United States said any new Israeli-Palestinian peace push must be based on a two-state solution but that the USA administration had yet to present an actual plan for reviving negotiations.
He tells NBC's "Meet the Press" that Trump is listening carefully to both Israelis and Palestinians about whether moving the embassy would be helpful for peace talks or a distraction.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived here today on a four-day visit during which he will hold extensive talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on key bilateral, regional and worldwide issues, including the Middle East peace process.
The American delegation accompanying Trump during his visit has reportedly expressed its opposition to a request from Netanyahu to share the podium with Trump in order to deliver a five to seven minute speech either before or after the U.S. president.
However, the global community does not recognize Israel's annexation of east Jerusalem, which the Palestinians seek as the capital of a future independent state. They want a state based on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as their capital, something Netanyahu has resisted.
While Trump has not taken any action on his pledge to move the embassy so far, the Palestinian leadership fiercely opposes any such effort, and the worldwide community has warned that it could spark unrest. He said Israel must oppose attempts to establish a Palestinian state and insist on Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem "forever".
Officials are also considering a lesser announcement outlining a USA vision for the future of Jerusalem as Israel's capital without taking any immediate action, created to help Trump save face on his campaign pledge. He has yet to make any concrete moves toward carrying out that promise.
The following day, Trump will speak at Masada, the Roman-era fortress in the Negev Desert, and meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
"The President has recently expressed his view that he wants to put a lot of effort into seeing if we can not advance a peace initiative between Israel and Palestine", Tillerson said.
