Callista Gingrich To Be Named Vatican Ambassador

Callista Gingrich to be ambassador to Vatican

Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich poses with his wife, Callista, outside St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican in 2009.

The decision to nominate Gingrich was first rumored back in January and others, like former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum, were also considered for the job.

A nomination of Callista Gingrich could come this week, pending approval from the Office of Government Ethics.

Mr. Gingrich, reached by phone on Sunday evening, declined to confirm or deny that his wife would be nominated, saying only that he and his wife were told to "be very cautious" until an actual nomination was announced.

"Maybe say to the American people - send in your questions, we'll take the best five questions and we'll answer them by name", Gingrich said, calling the press "dishonest opponents" of the president.

Gingrich was anxious that a move to Europe would prevent her husband, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, from defending the president on television, according to Axios.

In 2010, the company released the film "Nine Days That Changed the World" about Pope John Paul II's nine-day pilgrimage to Poland in 1979 and how it played a part in the fall of communism in Europe. The couple reportedly had an affair while the speaker was still married to his second of three wives, Marianne Gingrich.

While some might view an Ambassadorial appointment to the Vatican as largely ceremonial, it's not exactly like an appointment to a place like Fiji or the Federated States of Micronesia, where a U.S. Ambassador is likely to face a low-paced and undemanding appointment.

"She also loves the church and the United States", he told Catholic News Service May 15.
