Trump warns ousted Federal Bureau of Investigation chief not to leak to media, threatens 'tapes'

No one from the White House. "It used to be the message not just of the White House, but of America".

Among a string of tweets sent out early Friday morning, President Donald Trump threatened to stop daily White House press briefings.

This now appears to be the second time this week that Trump has taken to Twitter in order to intimidate a possible witness against him.

After the onslaught of criticism for the way the White House has changed details of its Comey firing narrative, Mr Trump tweeted on Friday that because of his busy schedule and with lots of things happening, it was not "possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with ideal accuracy".

The Senate Intelligence Committee is conducting a wide-ranging investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election, and is looking at sensitive questions about whether anyone in Mr. Trump's orbit coordinated with Russia.

Mr Trump said he and Mr Comey "had a very nice dinner, and at that time he told me, 'You are not under investigation, ' which I knew anyway".

"I think the president wants loyalty to this country and to the rule of law", he said. He leans heavily on daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner, as well as Hope Hicks, his trusted campaign spokeswoman and Keith Schiller, his longtime bodyguard.

Then-FBI Director James Comey testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington.

"When the Nixon tapes became public, what shocked people so much was the difference between what Nixon said in public and what Nixon said in private", said Nichter, who asked if Trump tapes would reveal the same thing - if there is a difference between the public and private Trump.

At Issue: Could the Trump presidency be in serious jeopardy?

The fiery South Carolinian who made his name grilling Hillary Clinton over the 2012 attack on a US diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, and the Texan who serves as the number two Republican in the Senate are among the candidates under consideration to lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation after James Comey's high-profile firing earlier this week.

Trump spent most of the week out of sight, a marked change from a typically jam-packed schedule that often includes multiple on-camera events per day.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer told a news briefing that Trump did not demand Comey's loyalty. He's viewed even senior advisers suspiciously, including Bannon and Priebus, when stories about internal White House drama land in the press.

In two subsequent phone conversations, Comey also assured him he was not under investigation.

In Trump's case, he went on television and brazenly volunteered the information.

Much of Trump's ire has been focused on the communications team, all of whom were caught off guard by Comey's ouster.

Mr. Rosenstein wrote a memo that the White House initially claimed was the basis for Mr. Comey's removal.

Trump also hit back on Friday at media reports questioning the credibility of White House accounts of why Comey was sacked, which have changed over the course of the week and threatened an end to regular White House press briefings.

"Nixon found out the hard way that having tape recordings of your conversations can backfire", Hughes said.

This talking point - that former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said there was "no evidence" of Trump campaign-Russia collusion - was debunked during a Senate hearing on Monday featuring testimony from Clapper and former acting Attorney General Sally Yates.
