French ex-prime minister Valls offers to back Macron in June elections

"There's no sense for a Socialist to work against Emmanuel Macron".

Former French Socialist prime minister Manuel Valls said on Tuesday he wanted to stand for President-elect Emmanuel Macron's political movement in June parliamentary elections, the first high-profile defection since Macron's election win on Sunday. Until recently he was deputy editor-in-chief at Agence France Presse.

This was the 2016 USA presidential election all over again, but fortunately, on Sunday, French voters elected the level-headed Macron.

Webber said: "Adam's extremely clear writing and analysis impressed me immediately: his eye for human detail and careful examination of the stages of the Macron surge add a thrilling dimension to this tale of unexpected political victory". With no representation in the country's National Assembly the young leader's initial challenge is to secure his party's first seats in June's crucial parliamentary elections.

On both sides of the traditional divide, the signs so far are that the large parties which have long dominated are struggling to maintain leverage over Macron via the lower house of parliament without losing too many of their troops through defections to his camp. "He said Europe and the world are "watching us" and waiting for us to deend the spirit of the Enlightenment, threatened in so many places".

Macron's party, En Marche, has promised to put up a candidate for all 577 seats in the Assembly.

Mr Macron's campaign members Christophe Castaner and Benjamin Griveaux said Mr Valls is welcome but would have to go through the regular application process.

Her father and co-founder of FN Jean-Marie Le Pen made it to the second round in 2002, but lost to Jacques Chirac by a big margin of 17.8 to 82.2 percent.

Nearly definitive results showed Macron winning 65.82 percent of the vote in the first ever election he has contested, far ahead of the nationalist Le Pen at 34.18 per cent.

Macron has already spoken by telephone with US President Donald Trump, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and British Prime Minister Theresa May among other leaders. The Macron presidency promises interesting times.

"He's a symbol of hope", said Jean-Luc Songtia, a 36-year-old driver.

With 66.06 percent of the votes, the 39-year old French politician defeated his ultraright rival Marie Le Pen, who obtained 33.94 percent of the ballots. "I will be a candidate in the presidential majority and I wish to join up to his movement, the Republic on the Move".

Macron won after one of the most unpredictable elections in modern history marked by scandal, repeated surprises and a last-minute hacking attack on his campaign.
