SRINAGAR, Jammu and Kashmir: Two civilians, a militant and a policeman have been killed in the disputed Jammu and Kashmir in a gun battle between the police and militants.

A terrorist, wanted by the National investigation Agency (NIA) in the 2015 Udhampur terror attack, was killed in an attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district yesterday. He was one of the accused in the August 2015 attack on a BSF convoy in Udhampur in which two paramilitary personnel were killed and 13 others were injured.

During exchange of fire, three other policemen were also injured.

Director General of Police, SP Vaid said the militants had started shooting at a team of police officers who had gone to Mir Bazaar to investigate an accident. Eyewitnesses in Kulgam said four militants appeared at the funeral of Ahmad, who hailed from the district.

The injured militant was taken to a local hospital where he was declared brought dead, police said. At least four terrorists appeared amid the crowd and fired gunshots in the air from their AK-assault rifles to offer salute to their slain cadre, said sources adding, "The terrorists raised some slogans and then fled".

Soon after the attack, police had arrested a Pakistani national and member of LeT, later identified as Mohammad Naveed alias Usman.

It was one of the deadliest attack targeting police and bank guards.

According to reports the gunmen opened fire at police who were clearing traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu highway.

The incident comes just a couple of days after the security forces carried out a major combing operation in the neighbouring Shopian district to flush out militants.

Anti-India sentiment runs deep in the predominantly Muslim Kashmir valley, one of the world's most heavily militarised areas, where most people favour independence or a merger with Pakistan. More than 500,000 Indian soldiers are deployed in Kashmir regularly to crack down on civilians.
