Body Found in Grand Canyon Believed to Be Missing Teen Hiker

National Park Service shows Tapeats Creek in Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona

This undated photo released by the McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 shows Jackson Standefer.

It was discovered Friday by a commercial river trip at Colorado River mile 152.

Mark McOmie, Standefer's uncle, said in a Facebook post that the family is waiting to comment until the body is formally identified.

Park Service spokeswoman Robin Martin said rangers were continuing to patrol the backcountry in search of Merrell, a former emergency medical technician whose husband, Randy, is a founder of the Merrell Boot Co.

Search and rescue teams spent days searching with boats, ground crews, drones and helicopter unsuccessfully. Authorities scaled back search efforts last week.

A body believed to be that of a McCallie School student who was swept away in a creek in the Grand Canyon was recovered on Friday. It was transported by helicopter to the Coconino County Medical Examiner, which will confirm identification.

Standefer and his grandmother LouAnn Merrell, 62, went missing in the Arizona park on April 15.

Officials have analyzed the disappearance from the little evidence that is provided, to conclude that the teenager and his step-grandmother were crossing a creek when they lost their footing and were swept away.

"The entire McCallie community sends its prayers to the Standefer family and all those close to Jackson as we all hope for a positive ending to this situation", the school said in a statement to ABC News.

Experienced hikers say it's an arduous hike down the canyon that ends in stunning and unique views.
