Smartphone Market: Not Dead Yet

Roughly 347 million smartphones were shipped worldwide in the first quarter of 2017, a 4.3% jump from the previous year, according to new research released Thursday by International Data Corporation.

Huawei has yet to reveal any larger plans for the United States, but in Canada, the company will begin selling its flagship P10 and P10 Plus smartphones through nationwide carriers Rogers and Bell starting in early June. However, as compare to a year ago report of same quarter, Samsung and Apple dose not show any improvement.

As a source noted out, Apple utilizes modems built by both Qualcomm and Intel in its current iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models.

New Delhi, Apr 28 Smartphone shipments in India grew 15 per cent to 29 million units in March quarter compared to the year-ago period, with top five brands capturing nearly 70 per cent of total segment, research firm COUNTERPOINT said. The higher-capacity iPhone SE and red iPhone 7 arrived at the end of the quarter, though nobody was really expecting either to move the needle. The Cupertino tech giant could become a greater threat to Samsung this fall, when it (potentially) puts out a special edition 10th anniversary iPhone.

Samsung reported its highest quarterly profit in three years, a noteworthy figure considering the company's highly touted Galaxy S8 smartphone was released after the close of the first quarter. And the company is determined to crack the USA market, where the real profit margins - through sales of those premium smartphones - are waiting.

Huawei announced that it sold over 5 million units of Mate 9 since it launched in November. However, despite Huawei's phones have yet to catch on with US consumers, which IDC said "is something they will need if they aspire to displace the two market leaders". It has been aggressive in both above-the-line and below-the-line activities in India, and stepped up with its after-sales service efforts in several Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia by increasing its number of service centers. In the case of OPPO, the brand was propped up by the success of its camera-focused R9s in China, although its growth in global markets have been even more spectacular. Huawei has also been pushing its brand in Canada during the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Other smartphone makers suffered a drop of one percent and lost market share from 42.1 percent to 39.9 percent. In Southeast Asia, it continues to have its own promoters aggressively pushing its phones in the market.
