Wear Denim on Wednesday April 26

Louisville leaders hope to increase awareness to sexual assault in the community. Now, Guess and Peace Over Violence's Denim Day is encouraging you to rock your best pair of jeans or ideal denim jacket in order to combat sexual violence.

For the past 18 years, Peace Over Violence has run its Denim Day campaign on a Wednesday in April in honor of Sexual Violence Awareness Month. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault.

Chicago is having Denim Day Self-Defense Workshops. "We ask everyone to wear jeans on April 26 and stand with us to raise awareness about rape and to support survivors". "We are focusing on it instead of thinking 'Oh, it's such a taboo thing to talk about.' We're telling people it's ok to talk about it, because if you talk about it that's going to bring awareness, and awareness brings lower rates of sexual assault".

A Denim Day NYC march is scheduled to begin at 4:45 p.m in the Bronx. An Italian court overturned the conviction saying, the victim's jeans were too tight, so she must have helped the perpetrator get them off, implying a consensual encounter.

"There's a lot of issues with language, and it will vary between advocates, versus the legal system, versus police officers, versus everything else, and there's a lot of connotations of the language that you use", Dutter said.

The Center for Women in Transition in Holland invites you to join them wearing denim today.
